A Day Trip to Vienna Zoo

by admin on October 3, 2011

This last weekend we took a day trip down to the Vienna Zoo. The beauty of Brno is that is very close to Vienna (and Bratislava). By car the trip is about 120km one-way and, apart from a stretch of around 40km in the middle, it is virtually all motorway making a day trip feasible.

We used GPS to navigate across Vienna to the Zoo and entered via a back entrance allowing us to park in a residential street and avoid parking fees – which are pretty steep. The Zoo itself is the oldest zoo in the world apparently and it cost us 12 Eur each to get in (though kids under 6 are free). I’m not much of a zoo person myself but I have to admit it was a great day. There are plenty of restaurants on the complex there serving quality food and wine though at Euro prices.

The zoo is well laid out and has many unusual features in terms of places to visit and things for kids to do. It has a great compliment of animals too from the Panda to Lions, Elephants, Giraffes and so on. The day was sunny and warm and we did get a bit tired walking around as it is quite a large facility. Additionally, for a bit of extra cash, you can visit a labyrinth, the castle and several other attractions while there or ride the train around the park.

With Vienna being so close, we often make the trip down to Prater or to do some shopping.

If you don’t have a car, Vienna is also served by train and bus from Brno.
